CORTLAND, NY – Consistent scoring from SUNY Cortland resulted in a 47-3 victory over the Alfred University football team on Saturday afternoon from the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.
The Saxons (4-4, 3-1 Empire 8) compiled 132 yards in the air, while rushing for 112 yards.
"Cortland is a very good team and we made way too many mistakes that they capitalized on," Head Coach
Bob Rankl said. "I give them credit for an excellent game today. While I'm not happy with how we performed on the field, I thought our players played hard and competed for 60 minutes."
The Red Dragons found early offensive rhythm in the opening quarter, scoring twice within the first five minutes of action. Two missed PATs from SUNY Cortland resulted in a 12-0 deficit for the Saxons at the end of the first quarter. AU didn't find an answer defensively in the first half, as they trailed 26-0 at halftime.
SUNY Cortland piled on 10 more points to open the second half before the Saxons put together a 12-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal from
Dustin McCaslin (Ashville, NY/Chautauqua Lake, NY) in the third quarter. The Red Dragons scored once more in the fourth quarter to distance their lead.
"We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves about this game," Rankl said. "Our focus needs to immediately shift to playing Utica."
The Saxons will return home to host Utica College next Saturday at 1:00 PM as part of their Hall of Fame Weekend and Senior Day.
