Wesneski Earns 100th Career Victory as Saxons Earn Dramatic Florida Sweep

Leesburg, Fla. – Alana Eaton (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) tied a school-record with five hits in game one, Sydney Saucedo (Whittier, CA/La Serna) tallied a walk-off, RBI single in game two, and head coach Luke Wesneski earned his 100th career victory for the Alfred University softball team, who earned a sweep in day four of THE Spring Games, held at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex Thursday afternoon.

Alfred's record stands at 5-3 after eight games in Florida. The Saxons began the day with a 6-2 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-4), then outlasted The College of Wooster (3-3) in a 1-0 victory. The Saxons have won five of six since starting the season 0-2.

Eaton went 5-for-5 in the game one victory against Wentworth, tying a school record for hits in a game. She ties the mark originally set by Jessica Snyder, Tara Harwood, and Michelle Whiteside against Hilbert on April 14, 1999; the record was then matched by both Shanna Ewoldt and Molly Shepherd against Cazenovia on April 20, 2010.

Saucedo walked it off in dramatic fashion for the Saxons, tallying an RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Her late-inning heroics helped earn Wesneski his 100th career victory as head coach of AU. He becomes the second coach in program history to reach 100 wins, joining Geno Olivieri.

GAME ONE

AU once again jumped on the board to begin the game. Eaton got on with a one-out double. The next batter, Alyssa Guitron (San Bernardino, CA/Cajon) drove her home with a run scoring double to take the 1-0 lead. The Saxons have scored first in all five of its wins this season and have scored nine first inning runs in their first seven games. Wentworth tied things up in the bottom of the inning, as Brianna Beverly got on with a one out single, then scored on a passed ball.

The Saxons took the lead in the top of the third. Eaton led the inning off with a single to center. After a couple of walks loaded the bases, Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) singled in a run, scoring Eaton to take the 2-1 lead. Tatiana Mejia (North Hills, CA/John F. Kennedy) then hit a sacrifice fly out to left field, giving the Saxons a 3-1 lead. AU tacked on a run in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, and another in the sixth, when O'Toole drove in Eaton with the RBI single.

Wentworth broke the Saxon run in the bottom of the sixth, as Sabrina Haarstick drove in a two-out RBI single to center field. In the top of the seventh, AU got a big lift from its bench when Molly Lawson (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Trabuco Hills) drove a pinch-hit single past third base, giving the Saxons the 6-2 lead. Moreta Dyke (Milesburg, PA/Bald Eagle Area) shut the door in the seventh inning to complete the victory.

The Saxons tallied a season-high 16 hits in the victory. The 16 hits were the highest total in a game since hitting 17 against Lycoming on April 10, 2018. Eaton led the way with the aforementioned five, scoring three runs and stealing two bases. Jillian Murray (Eden, NY/Eden) added three hits. Mejia went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while O'Toole went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Guitron, Lawson, Elena Ceja (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Beach Union), and Saucedo tallied hits, with Guitron, Saucedo, and Murray scoring a run each.

Hatch (1-1) was solid on the mound, earning her first collegiate victory. She allowed one earned run in four innings of work, scattering three hits and striking out a pair of batters. Murray pitched two innings and allowed an earned run off of two hits, striking out two. Dyke pitched a perfect seventh inning, needing just seven pitches.

GAME TWO

Game two was another pitching classic, this time between Alfred's Jessica Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) and Wooster's Marissa Norgrove. Wilcox breezed through the first nine Wooster batters in order before running into trouble in the third inning. Molly Likins hit a leadoff double into right field and Brooke Swain singled to put runners on first and third with no outs. After Swain stole second base without incident, Wilcox reached back and struck out Rachel Ginsburg for the first out. In the next at bat, Emmalee Cooke hit a Wilcox pitch back to the mound, but the senior grabbed the ball and threw home to Mara Moore (Torrance, CA/West High), tagging out Likins in a close play at the plate. Wilcox then got out the inning by forcing a fly out to the sure-handed Eaton.

Wilcox's counterpart, Norgrove, was even more impressive, working a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Saxons finally got its first hit after Saucedo reached on an error, then Moore hit a ball in between the pitcher and catcher, ending the no-no. Norgrove was then replaced by Olivia Johnson, who ended the Saxon threat with the bases loaded.

AU could not be denied in the seventh. O'Toole led the inning off with a single to center field, then Murray and Moore worked four-pitch walks, loading the bases with one out. With Saucedo at the plate and the winning run 60 feet away, Saucedo placed a hard-hit ball to the right of the charging second baseman, who couldn't handle it as O'Toole sprinted across the plate to score, with the team exploding in celebration.

Wilcox (3-2) earned the win, scattering three hits over seven shutout innings, striking out eight batters. Norgrove earned the no-decision allowing just one hit over 5.1 innings, striking out four. Johnson (2-2) took the loss, allowing one earned over one inning pitched, striking out one but walking three.

Alfred will face Haverford and Concordia-Chicago on Friday at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex. The Saxons will begin with Haverford at 9:15 a.m., followed by the Concordia contest at 1:30 p.m.
