ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team (7-8, Empire 8 5-3) dropped their first spring match of 2019 to Daemen College on the William T. Brown Tennis Courts Thursday afternoon. Both junior Amber Smith (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) and first-year Talulla Torthe (Pretoria, South Africa/St. Mary's Diocesan-South Africa) went undefeated on the day.
 
The Saxons jumped out on top in doubles play when Smith and Torthe took #3 doubles 8-5 to open the match. However, the Wildcats bounced back and took the lead 2-1 after doubles play.
 
Smith knotted the match up again, 2-2, at the start of singles play, winning her match with ease, 6-0, 6-0. Daemen went on a three-match win-streak to seal the win before Torthe won at #6 singles 6-3, 6-2. The Wildcats won the last match of the day, taking the win 6-3.
 
"Today was a fun match for us," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "I'm proud of the team for their resiliency despite not being as sharp as I know they wanted to be. Look forward to our match on Monday!"
 
The Saxons will host Oswego State on Monday beginning at 3PM.
