Saxons Battle Back to Force Tie With Westminster

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team hosted Westminster College on Wednesday evening. The Saxons (4-3-3, 0-1-1 Empire 8) battled back after giving up an early goal to tie with the Titans by a score of 1-1.

The action picked up early as Westminster pushed the ball in front of the AU net where multiple deflections took place before the ball snuck past the Alfred goal keeper to put the Titans up 1-0 at the 1:45 mark of the first half.

The Saxons had a plethora of opportunities as they dominated shots taken (25) to Westminster's 10 and took 10 corner kicks while the Titans attempted just three.

When it looked like the Saxons may run out if gas and fall short in this one, Olivia Cronmiller (Livonia, NY / Livonia) put a shot on goal that deflected off of the Westminster goal keeper and directly over to Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream South) who buried into the back of the net in the 83rd minute.

That goal tied the game at one and forced the game into overtime.

The overtime periods were tightly contested by both teams with each squad having near goals during the extra time.

In the end, neither team could convert before time ran out in the second overtime period with the score still tied at one.

"I thought the team did well battling back to tie the score after going down in the opening minutes," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We'll look to move forward and build on this before Saturday against Sage."

Makenzie Cashmer (Weedville, PA / Elk County Catholic) was solid in goal for the Saxons with five saves on the night. Natalie O'Brien (Syracuse, NY / East Syracuse-Minoa Central) was putting the pressure on the Titan defense all night with three shots on goal.

The Saxons will be back at home on Saturday night to host The Sage Colleges at 7PM.
