HAMBURG, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team defeated host Hilbert College, 2-0 Wednesday evening for their first win of the 2017 season.
After a scoreless first half, the Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) came out determined as junior captain
Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) got in the scoring column in the 53
rd minute off the restart of play. Alfred continued to add on to the lead as senior
Sara Nostrant (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy) found the upper left corner, just out of reach from the goalie's glove, in the 63
rd minute of action.
"The team came out and put a solid 90 minutes together for the first time this year," head coach
Craig Yanni said. "They kept their work-rate at a high level from start to finish. This was a great team-showing considering the recent injuries we have suffered.
Emily Wright proved to be a threat consistently throughout the game."
The Saxons dominated in shots taken, 32-7, while having the slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
Senior goalie
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) picked up the win in net, making three saves in the contest.
The Saxons are home this Saturday, September 9
th, as they take on the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers at 1 p.m.
