ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team lost to visiting New Paltz 4-1 Friday evening in the opening game of the Alfred University Tournament at Yunevich Stadium.
 
The Saxons (0-1,0-0 Empire 8) lone goal came at the 83^th minute as sophomore Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) was able to get behind the defense to put Alfred on the board.
 
"We lost some players early and it was tough to rebound from it," head coach Craig Yanni said. "But hopefully tomorrow will be different."
 
The Hawks had the slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4, while also having the advantage in shots, 11-7.
 
Senior Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) went the distance in net, making five saves on nine shots faced.
 
The Saxons are back in action tomorrow, September 2^nd, as they take on visiting Smith College at 12 p.m.
