Play of the Week
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team won its first game of the season by defeating Wells College, 12-9 Thursday evening at Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) were paced by junior
Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) as she finished with five goals and two assists. The senior trio of
Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron), Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), and
Hayley Katz (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) each had two goals in the contest.
The Express were led by
Mackenzie Maloney with six goals and two assists.
Wells College got the scoring going early as Maloney scored just 27 seconds into the game. Alfred came back scoring the game's next three goals. The Saxons would take a 7-5 lead going into halftime as Johnston would create some distance scoring with 1:16 remaining in the frame.
The Express came close on many occasions as Maloney would make it a one-goal game with 7:41 remaining in regulation before Katz and Gilbert put the game out of reach.
Gilbert also had a busy night on the defensive end as she caused five turnovers and came away with seven groundballs. Senior
Leah Ellithorpe (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) added four groundballs, going along with her first goal of the season.
Junior
Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) went the distance in net picking up the win while making 10 saves.
The Saxons are next in action this Saturday, March 25
th, as the open up conference play at Ithaca College at 1 p.m.
