Men's Swimming Strong-Arms Fredonia in Tri-Meet at Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming and diving team wrapped up a busy weekend with a win over Fredonia and a loss to University of Rochester Saturday in tri-meet action.
 
The Saxons topped Fredonia, 209-91, but fell to Rochester, 189-111. Alfred University got things started with a win in the 200 medley relay over both schools with a time of 1:37.98 produced by the squad of Andy Edmister (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central), Richard Berger (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz), Joseph Lawrence (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) and Yunneng Du (Yorktown, VA/Tabb). Immediately after the relay, Noah Koltenuk (Danville, PA/Danville Area) won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:00.61, edging out Rochester's Eric Weidman's 10:03.23.
 
Edmister was the next Saxon to take a win as he earned a first place over Fredonia in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.05. Zach Goodwin (Holden, MA/Wachusett) and Jason Zeames (Lewistown, NY/Lewistown-Porter) rounded out the Saxons' one-two-three combo in the event as they took second and third with times of 57.15 and 1:01.62, respectively against the Blue Devils.
 
Following the backstroke race, three members of the Purple and Gold had a repeat performance as they swept Fredonia in the 100 breaststroke. Berger, Ethan Zyglocke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and Michael Guarglia (Hornell, NY/Hornell) swam times of 1:02.43, 1:03.04 and 1:08.08, respectively.
 
Koltenuk picked up the next win over Fredonia in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.52. The Saxons picked up yet another sweep just after in the 50 freestyle as Du, Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) and Geno Darin (Boca Raton, FL/Olympic Heights) swam 22.07, 22.62 and 23.41 to defeat all three Blue Devil swimmers.
 
Edmister then picked up a win in the 200 backstroke over both teams in the tri-meet with a time of 1:58.67. Alec Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and Goodwin followed him with times of 2:04.10 and 2:09.35 to polish off another sweep against Fredonia. The Saxons tacked on another sweep against Fredonia in the 200 breaststroke as Berger, Du and Zyglocke went one-two-three with times of 2:20.26, 2:25.75 and 2:25.77, respectively.
 
Koltenuk topped both Rochester and Fredonia swimmers in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.46 before Lawrence did the same in the 100 fly with a time of 53.18.
 
The Saxon swimmers competing in the 200 individual medley combined for a first place, second place and a third place finish over Fredonia. Toth led the charge with a time of 2:05.70, just barely being out-touched by Rochester's Miles Markey and his 2:05.65 finish. Zyglocke followed with a 2:11.54 while Brown rounded it out with his 2:13.37.
 
Alfred University closed the day with a win over Fredonia in the 200 freestyle relay as Edmister, Derek Ciraolo (Grand Island, NY/St. Joseph's), Brown and Lawrence swam a 1:32.76.
 
The Saxons will next close out 2017 with a three-day visit to the Ithaca College Invitational on Friday, December 1 until Sunday.
