ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming and diving team narrowly fell in its season-opener to Rochester Institute of Technology 153-147 on Saturday morning in Lebohner Pool.

The Saxons were led by first-year
Noah Koltenuk (Danville, PA/Danville Area) who totaled three first place finishes in his individual events, the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:08.10), the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.30) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.12). He also teamed with junior
Zach Goodwin (Holden, MA/Wachusett), junior
Ethan Zyglocke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and first-year
Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) in the 200 medley relay to open the day with a third place finish with a time of 1:44.57.

"The men kept the meet exciting having it come down to the last relay," Head Coach
Brian Striker said. "There were some really great swims, from both upperclassmen and the first-year student-athletes. We are a better team that we were a year ago and have greater ambitions. This result, although not a win, gives us some re-assurance that we can be very competitive in our meets this year."

Andy Edmister (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central), junior
Richard Berger (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz), senior
Joseph Lawrence (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) and first-year
Geno Darin (Boca Raton, FL/Olympic Heights) took the early win with a time of 1:39.15.

Senior
Alec Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and Edmister joined Koltenuk as they both had multiple first place finishes on the day. Toth took first in the 200 freestyle (1:52.13) and 200 individual medley (2:06.14) while Edmister won both of his individual events with the 100 (54.28) and 200 backstroke (2:01.76). Toth also finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:03.62).

Lawrence earned the Saxons' last individual first place when he swam a 54.03 in the 100 fly. He also tacked on a third place finish in the 100 free (50.92).

First-year
Yunneng Du (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) picked up a total of four second place finishes with three in individual events. He swam a 1:52.36 in the 200 free, a 23.07 in the 50 free and a 2:23.29 in the 200 breaststroke. Du then teamed with senior
Derek Ciraolo (Grand Island, NY/St. Joseph's), Brown and Edmister in the 200 free relay to take second with a 1:30.03.

Other second place finishers for the Saxons were Darin and Berger. Darin took second in the 100 free (50.85) and Berger finished second in the 100 breast (1:02.97).

The Saxons will next head to Rochester, NY to face Nazareth College in a dual meet on Friday, October 27 at 6 pm.
