ITHACA, NY -- The Alfred University softball team saw its season end Saturday afternoon with an 8-0 six-inning loss to St. John Fisher in an elimination game of the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament.
With the loss, Alfred ends its season with a 29-12 record.
The Saxons' only hit in the game was a sixth-inning single by junior first baseman
Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill).
Sophomore
Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) took the pitching loss for AU, the double-elimination tournament's fourth seed. Keeler started and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out two. Sophomore
Shannon Schaefer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) pitched an inning of relief, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out one.
St. John Fisher, the second seed, will play top-seed and host team Ithaca at 1 p.m. Sunday. If Ithaca wins, the Bombers will claim the tournament title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. If Fisher wins, the same teams will play in a winner-take-all championship game Sunday afternoon at a time to be announced.
AU had two players named to the Empire 8 All-Tournamennt Team: Chiavatti and junior third baseman
Liz Thomson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). Chiavatti batted .375 (3-for-8) in the three games Alfred played, with three RBIs. She drove in all three runs in Alfred's 3-2 win over Utica in an elimination game Friday. Thompson was also 3-for-8 in the three games, with a double and a run scored.
