ITHACA, NY – The Alfred University softball team dropped both ends of an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Ithaca College Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons lost both games by 4-1 scores to fall to 14-10 overall and an even 5-5 in Empire 8 play.

In the opener, Ithaca scored a run in the first before AU tied the game with a run in the top of the third. Senior catcher
Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) singled to open the inning. Freshman
Dominique D'Andrea (Waterford, NJ/St. Joseph), pinch running for Picini, stole second and moved to third on a groundout before coming home on a single by senior outfielder
Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport).

Ithaca answered in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs to close out the scoring.

AU had three hits in the game, by Picini, Passuite and senior outfielder
Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay). Sophomore pitcher
Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) took the loss to fall to 5-6 on the year. She allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings, striking out five.

In the second game, Ithaca scored two runs in the first and two more in the fourth to go up 4-0. Alfred scored its lone run of the game in the sixth, when Jauregui singled and advanced to second on a single by senior shortstop
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy). After moving to third on a groundout, Jauregui scored on a single by senior second baseman
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.)

The Saxons had eight hits in the game. In addition to Torchia, Maher and Jauregui (two hits), junior third baseman
Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), freshman outfielder
Becca Alexander (Middletown, DE/Middletown) (double), Passuite, and junior first baseman
Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill) also had hits.

Shannon Schaefer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) took the pitching loss for AU, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in six innings, with one strikeout.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, April 19, at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Penn College.
