ALFRED, NY – A goal by sophomore midfielder Lauren Wyant (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) with under a minute left in regulation broke a scoreless tie and gave the Alfred University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Wells College Sunday afternoon at Yunevich Stadium.
 
The game appeared destined to go to extra time before freshman midfielder Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) lofted a free kick from midfield toward the Wells goal. The ball bounced over a Wells defender and Wyant collected it just outside the penalty box, chipping a shot over Wells keeper Quinn Doubet and into the net to give AU the lead with 55 seconds left in the contest.
 
Alfred (1-2) dominated play, outshooting the Express, 21-5. Doubet was called on to make 12 saves, while AU sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) stopped one shot. With the loss, Wells falls to 0-4 on the season.
 
Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. at Keuka.
