TUSCON, AZ – The Alfred University softball team earned a pair of wins during its spring break trip to Arizona over Loras College and Edgewood College on Friday afternoon.
Freshman
Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) picked up a win in the pitcher's circle during the Saxons' 12-5 win in the early matchup with Loras. She pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six hits for five runs (four earned) while retiring five batters before freshman
Shannon Schaefer (Neptune, NJ/Westfield) came in for the remaining 1.2 innings. Schaefer gave up no hits and struck out one player.
Senior
Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) pitched a no-hitter in Friday's nightcap against Edgewood. The only batters to reach base were off of walk and a hit-by-pitch in the 8-0, six-inning Saxon win. Wickwire sat down 10 batters during the contest.
In Friday's opening game, Wickwire went 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. She added a 2-for-3 performance against Edgewood with two doubles, another three RBI and scored a run.
Sophomore
Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two scored runs and got a stolen base to help lead Wickwire in the Saxons' morning game with Loras. Junior
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) added a double that earned her two RBI while junior
Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) had a sacrificed fly, sac bunt and two RBI. The other AU teammates to garner at least one RBI were junior
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Township), sophomore
Hannah Lawrence (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) and senior
Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard).
Lawrence went yard in the Edgewood game to cap off a solid 2-for-3 performance that boasted a double and totaled three RBI. Maher connected on one pitch for a two RBI double while Torchia went 3-for-3, scoring twice and having the walk off RBI single.
The Saxons (8-2) finish their Arizona stay on Saturday, March 14 when they meet Loras College again at 11 a.m. and then take on Marian University at 1:30 p.m.
