ALFRED, NY—The AU women's soccer team closed out its 2014 season with a 1-0 loss to Daemen College on Wednesday evening.
An early goal would prove to be the difference in a game full of offensive surges. The Wildcat goal came off a corner kick sent in by Rose Carboni who found Juli Prentice for the goal in the 13
th minute. The Wildcats looked to increase their lead in the 21
st minute, but the Saxons caught a break when the ball rattled off the crossbar.
The Saxons looked to mount an offensive attack of their own in the 29
th minute when
Nicole Lobur (Akron, NY/Akron) ripped a shot on goal but Kathryn Haessner turned the ball away.
Mariana Crevison (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) scooped up the rebound and attempted to follow up the shot from Lobur, but the ball went wide of the net. The half would end in favor the Wildcats, 1-0.
Once again, the Saxons looked to deadlock the game at one when freshman
Delaney Martin (Knox, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerloo) took a chance in the 53
rd minute, but Haessner was there for the stop. It was a freshman again in the 73
rd minute when
Lauren Wyant (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) attempted some late game heroics and put a shot on goal. However, the ball was turned away to keep the Saxons off the board. As the game, and the season, came to an end the Saxons were topped 1-0.
Freshman keeper
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) had 16 saves, a career high for the young goalie.
The Saxons finished their season at 3-13-2 (Empire 8 0-7).
