ALFRED, NY—Freshman keeper Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) has been named the Alfred University Male Athlete of the week following his impressive performance against Stevens in the Empire 8 semifinal game where the Saxons tied the Ducks, 0-0.
Gutierrez was an integral part giving the Saxons the opportunity to top the Ducks in PK’s during the Empire 8 semifinal game on Friday afternoon. The young keeper logged 110 minutes in the goal, making six saves, and shutting out the #1 seeded Ducks. Gutierrez continued to impress in PK’s, stopping a powerful shot by Colin Phillips to give the Saxons the advantage. However, the Ducks would come back to advance 6-5 in PK’s over the Saxons.
Gutierrez and the Saxons look to rebound Wednesday evening against Drew University (9-5-6) in the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship quarterfinals. This is the first appearance for the Saxons men’s soccer team to the ECAC tournament since 1990 when AU was named co-champs with SUNY Plattsburgh due to the game being cancelled after a severe snowstorm.
