Senior Nick Schmidt helped the Saxons back to the Empire 8 Athletic Conference Championships for the second time in his four-year career with a huge night against No. 1 seeded, Nazareth College. Schmidt totaled 19 points on the evening, shooting .500 from 3-point land as he made 3-of-6 3-pointers including the game-winner with seven seconds remaining in the game. He made the Saxons’ final seven points of the game from that 3-pointer and four good free throws. All three of his long shots were made in the second half, including a layup and going 8-for-8 from the free throw line, making all 19 of his points occurring in the final 20 minutes. Schmidt tacked on five assists and three offensive rebounds. After clinching a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament, he scored 20 points against Utica College with a 7-for-8 performance from the charity stripe and added three 3-pointers and another field goal. He then scored nine points in the Saxon’s regular-season finale win over Hartwick College, hitting only 3-pointers. Schmidt had five assists in all three games. It is also his third game in a row with two or more offensive boards as he had three against not just Naz, but also Utica and two against Hartwick. He also tied his season-high of seven rebounds against Utica, bringing in four defensive. Schmidt had a steal against both Utica and Hartwick. He finishes the season as the Saxons’ leading scorer with 332 points (second in-conference with 208 points).
