Saxons thump Husson in season opener

Rankl gets win in debut as AU head coach

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University football team racked up 439 yards of offense and held visiting Husson University to under 200 as the Saxons trounced the Eagles, 34-17, Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
 
 
AU sophomore quarterback Tyler Johnson (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) completed 18 of 24 passes for 297 yards and tossed five touchdown passes. Sophomore wideout Brendan Buisch (Hornell, NY/Hornell) caught five passes for 86 yards and a pair of TDs. Bob Rankl, a long-time Saxon assistant, got the win in his Alfred head coaching debut.
 
 
After a scoreless first quarter, AU went up 7-0 on a 26-yard scoring toss from Johnson to senior tight end Isiah Young (Groton, NY/Groton) on the second play of the second quarter. Husson knotted the game at 7-7 on Shabashe McIntosh's 80-yard return of the ensuing kickoff.
 
AU scored two touchdowns in a two-minute span midway through the second. The first came on a 19-yard pass from Johnson to sophomore tailback Casey Bright (Pulaski, NY/Pulaski) with 9:58 left; the second, with left in the half, came on an 87-yard catch and run by junior wideout Bobby Broddus (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Husson made it 20-10 at intermission on a short field goal as the first-half clock expired.
 
Buisch caught the first of his two TD passes, a 13-yarder with 9:52 left in the third, to put AU up 27-10. After Husson drew to within 10 points at 27-17 with 8:23 left in the fourth, the Saxons put the game away on a 24-yard Johnson-to-Buisch scoring pass.
 
Sophomore wide receiver Rodney Etienne (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) caught seven passes for 74 yards and Young caught three for 31. Johnson was the Saxons' leading rusher, racking up 69 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore wide receiver Shaquille Muscadin (Monsey, NY/Ramapo) ran four times for 37 yards and added a 27-yard kickoff return.
 
Husson quarterback Joe Seccareccia threw for 134 yards and was intercepted once. Wideout Ryan Stroud caught six passes for 58 yards and tailback Kyle McKinnon ran for 27 yards on 10 carries.
 
Junior middle linebacker Corry Wallace (Mastic Beach, NY/Longwood) had a game-high 11 tackles (two for loss) and senior cornerback Mike Perkins (Rochester, NY/East) had five solo stops and an interception to lead the AU defense. Senior linebacker Justin Liberta (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and senior cornerback Lucas Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ruben Ayala) each had seven tackles.
 
Stephan Dance had 10 tackles and forced fumble and Ellis Throckmorton had nine tackles (two for loss) to pace the Husson defense.
 
AU is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 13, at noon at RPI.
