Box Score CANTON, NY- The Alfred University women's basketball team handed SUNY Canton their third loss of the season on the road, with a 78-50 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Saxons controlled the pace of the game from the start, going on an 11-0 run with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Alfred never trailed throughout the first half and headed into halftime with a 34-20 lead. Junior guard
Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) paced Alfred with eight points.
AU built off a well-established lead in the second half, never trailing en route to securing the win.
Turnovers plagued both team (14 each), but AU capitalized off the Kangaroos' miscues, scoring 12 points off turnovers. The Lady Saxons also out-rebounded Canton, 46-49, and showed depth with 34 of their points coming from the bench. For the game, Alfred held an advantage from the field (49 percent), beyond the arc (48 percent), and from the free throw line (56 percent).
Cleary finished the contest with a game-high 20 points, shooting four-for-seven from the three-point line and eight-for-15 from the field (two steals). Junior forward
Lindsay Drummond (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg) and freshman guard
Kathryn Polletta (Ossining, NY/Ossining) added 10 points apiece, and pulled down five and four rebounds. Junior guard
Emilea Harrison (Conesus, NY/Dansville) also earned a game-best six assists and scored nine points.
Alfred (2-2, 0-0 Empire 8) resumes play on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 5 p.m. against visiting Penn Tech.
