Box Score ERIE, PA- The Alfred University women's basketball team opened the 2013-2014 season at the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament with a 59-47 loss to hosting Penn St.-Behrend, Friday evening.
The Lions increased the pace of play halfway through the first half and went on a 10-0 run with 12:52 left in the first half. The Lady Saxons trailed 30-17 at halftime.
A layup from freshman forward
Amanda Off (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) with ten minutes remaining in the match brought AU within five points at 38-33. Penn St.-Behrend then called a timeout helping them to reestablish the lead, putting the game out of reach for Alfred.
For the game, Alfred outshot Penn St.-Behrend 41 percent (22-54) from the field, compared to their 37 percent (19-52) and shot 40 percent from the free throw line.
Junior guard
Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led Alfred in scoring with 13 points. Senior forward
Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) and freshman guard
Maddi Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) each scored eight and nine points.
Off finished the game with a team-best six rebounds and five points.
Natalie Corso scored a game-high 16 points (three steals) for the Lions.
Brianna Bayly and
Sadie Zielinski chipped in with 14 and 12 points apiece.
Brittany Kiger also pulled down a game-best nine rebounds.
AU (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) plays in the consolation game on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. against the loser of the John Carroll University versus Grove City College matchup.
