Saxons tripped up by Colonels, 18-8

ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University women's lacrosse team fell, 18-8, Tuesday evening in a nonconference matchup versus Wilkes University at Yunevich Stadium.
 
In the loss, the Saxons were led by sophomore Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), scoring five goals, collecting two groundballs and causing one turnover.  Junior Kerry Mack (Weedsport, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) followed Wendt with two goals, three groundballs, and four draw controls.  Senior Kaitlyn Button (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) added a goal in the game for AU, and led the team with six groundballs and four caused turnovers. 
 
The game began with a Colonels run of four goals in the first eight minutes.  The run was broken up by a Wendt's first goal.  Wendt would also break up a three-goal run by Wilkes' Carley Smith later in the half.  Wilkes scored the last two goals of the half to send the team off the field with a 9-2 difference.
 
In the second half the Colonels opened with two more goals to increase the lead.  Wendt was in to stop the run again, and netted her third goal.  Throughout the rest of the game the teams went back-and-forth, answering each other's goals.  Wendt ended the game with two more unassisted goals, to increase her total to five on the evening.
 
Freshman Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) was in goal for the Saxons, making 13 saves.  Wilkes' Kellie Kalada took home the win in goal for the Colonels making four saves and allowing seven goals. 
 
The Saxons (0-2, E8 0-0) return to action Fri. March 27, at home against Empire 8 foe St. John Fisher College.
