ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University men's lacrosse (7-0, E8 1-0) team continued its undefeated season Saturday afternoon with a 16-6 win over Keuka College at Yunevich Stadium.
Â
Senior
Nicolas Wood (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) and freshman
Jake Lynch (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) notched eight points each in the seventh win of the season for the Saxons. Wood led the team with six goals and two assists while Lynch chipped in with five goals and three assists. Junior
Tanner Morse (Corning, NY/Corning East) scored twice for AU while senior
Ben DeMarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown), sophomore
John Winchell (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and sophomore
Keenan Denis (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) all generated a goal each.
Â
It was the Saxons scoring early and often to open the game. The duo of Wood and Lynch combined for three goals in the first quarter. Denis added a screaming shot on a breakaway and DeMarco added the fifth goal in the quarter. The Wolfpack, an NCAA tournament qualifier in 2014, would grab a late goal in the first quarter to bring the game within reach, 5-2.
Â
Keuka was the first team on the board in the second quarter when
James Voigt rifled a shot into the net. However, Alfred's Wood scored two minutes later and the offenses remained quiet until the last minute of the half. In the final minute it was all AU, with Lynch grabbing two of his goals in one-on-one chances in front of the net. Winchell also found his lone goal of the day in the final seconds of the first half. As the teams headed off the field to end the period, AU was in control of a 9-3 advantage.
Â
With the momentum in hand the Saxons came out of the break ready to put the game away. Once again it was the Wood-Lynch combination accumulating three goals, along with Morse collecting his first goal of the day. AU's defense would shut out the Wolfpack in the third quarter to hold the lead, 13-3.
Â
Finally, Keuka was able to get on the board just seconds into the fourth quarter after being held scoreless for nearly 30 minutes, but the game was still out of reach. As if on command, Wood answered with a goal of his own a minute later to put the Saxons back up by ten, 14-4. Down the stretch Keuka and AU would score two goals each, with Lynch registering the last goal of the game at the 4:08 mark. As the officials whistled the Saxons walked away with a 16-6 victory.
Â
Sophomore
Jimmy Pratti (Minisink, NY/Minisink Valley) led the Saxons with eight groundballs in the contest. The faceoff specialist also won 18-of-25 faceoffs, giving him a .679 faceoff percentage on the season. Sophomore
Chris Deisenroth (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) collected six groundballs and two caused turnovers on the afternoon.Â
Â
Freshman goalie
Drew Gardner (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) played the entire game for the Saxons making six saves. He also amassed four groundballs and one caused turnover.
Â
With the win, the Saxons have outscored opponents 56-11 in their last three games. AU will look to maintain its pace Wed. March 25, at home against Empire 8 foe, Nazareth College at 4PM.
