Warren Sutton probably was the most multitalented basketball player ever to wear a uniform at Alfred University.
Sutton was a "man for all seasons." He could do it all, points, rebounds, assists, blocked shots, ball handling, defense. No question about it. he was the favorite of the noisy, sometimes boisterous crowds in old Davis Gym.
Check some of his performances - 39 points in game; 34 rebounds in one game. Career average 20.4 rebounds per game. 113 assists in one season. 46 blocks in a season. nearly blocked 100 shots during his career. 433 rebound season.
One memorable night before the home fans, Sutton turned defensive specialist. A tam came in with one of the leading scorers in Upstate New York. Sutton held him to two field goals as the AU crowd roared after every move.
Coach Pete Smith installs what he called "Sutton's Play." The other four AU players cleared the center court area. Then they forced someone on the other club to play Sutton 1-on-1, and Warren was a master at this old playground game.
Sutton captained both basketball and cross country teams at AU.
He was born in Chester, PA and is a graduate of Chester High School.
Now living in Kitchener (Ontario) Canada, Sutton is a computer systems analyst for the City of Kitchener.
His greatest thrill at AU: Winning nine of 11 games (1958-59) to finish with winning season.
