Valerie (Thompson) Dobson was the first woman in AU history to win a national title.
A 1984 graduate who earned her degree in criminal justice, Dobson became the first woman in AU history to claim a national championship when she ran a school record (14.36) in the 100-meter hurdles in 1983 at Naperville, IL during the NCAA Championships.
On three separate occasions, Dobson earned All-America honors in the 100-meter hurdles, including her groundbreaking win in 1983. She earned the ECAC Merit Medal as well at AU's Outstanding Senior-Athlete upon her graduation.
The Sweet Home High School graduate lists her 1983 national championship at the high point of her athletic career at AU. She worked for the University of Buffalo as a campus police officer and is a member of the International Association for Women Police. She also spends much of her time lecturing the community about personal safety, sex crimes and driving while intoxicated
