Tim Jaenecke was a four-year member of the AU swimming & diving team from 1980-84 under legendary AU head coach Michael Schaeberle. Jaenecke was a member of the 1982-83 and 1983-84 undefeated AU swimming & diving teams – the first two in program history. He was also a two-time All-American, earning recognition in the 400-medley relay (1982) and 800-freestyle relay (1984) while setting AU school records in the 50 free and 100 free.

Jaenecke, who passed away in 2007 after a heroic battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), was recently memorialized in 2017 by the AU swimming & diving team and alumni with the installation of the “Tim Jaenecke Memorial Record Boards” in the McLane Natatorium.

Coach Schaeberle said prior to the dedication, “Tim was a dedicated student-athlete, a hard-working, competitive swimmer who never complained about how difficult the workouts were. Tim was the quiet achiever, who pushed everyone around him to be better. Tim was a man of action and little talk who was well liked by all his fellow swimmers.”

Former teammate, John Hyde ‘83, added: “With Tim as Alfred’s freestyle anchor on several of the All-American relay teams, we knew we were unstoppable. If we were close on the changeover, you could rely on Tim to ensure he would bring home the win.”

Jaenecke is survived by his wife, Kimberly and his three children: Katie, Kara, and Nathan.
