Schindelar was a member of the track and field team. He became the fourth Saxons’ tack and field athlete to earn All-American status when he placed sixth in the pole vault at the 1983 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was the first Saxon to clear 15 feet in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault and still holds the school record for both events. In 1984, he won the pole vault at the New York State Outdoor Championships and was the ICAC indoor pole vault champion in 1982 and 1984. Schindelar also won the decathlon at the University of Rochester meet in 1984 and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships where he placed 10th overall with 6,301 points.
