Mary Beth Dooley Horsington is the first swimmer to be honored with membership of the AU Sports Hall of Fame.
Her record made it an easy choice. Over a three-year stretch, she scored 88 victories while placing second seven times and third once. During the 1974-75 swimming year she won 34 out of 35 races.
At one time she held eight AU records. Two of them remained on the board in 1986; 28.53 in the 50-yard butterfly and 1:04.99 in the 100-yard butterfly. She also scored four times in state competition.
"Mary Beth was a very hard worker," Head Coach Mike Schaeberly said. "She was easy to coach and certainly consistent. On top of it all, she is just a nice person."
Born in W. Springfield, MA, she is a graduate of Longmeadow High School where she was captain of th swim team. She was selected on the Western Massachusetts Girls All-Star team.
Mary Beth was an artist/writer/editor at several newspapers in New England, Florida and New York state. She was on the staff of the Syracuse Post-Standard as an editor. Since her marriage and birth of two children, she has continued as a freelance writer.
Mary Beth is married to John Horsington, former AU football player. They have two children, Megan and Kathleen.
