Mark Shardlow was an All-American defensive tackle and a standout on the 1981 team that went 10-1 and earned the school’s only berth in the NCAA Division III championships. Shardlow had 96 tackles that season, helping to anchor a defense that allowed 9.4 points per game and 183 yards per contest, including a mere 65 yards rushing per game (tops in Division III).
For his career, the 1981 AP honorable mention All-American had 165 tackles.
Shardlow lists as one of his most memorable moments as an AU student-athlete the 17-13 victory over Ithaca during the 1981 season. It was Alfred’s first win over the Bombers in nine games and propelled the Saxons to their undefeated regular season and a berth in the NCAAs.
Shardlow earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology (1983) and a master’s degree in community services administration (1997) from AU and is former executive director of operations for Alfred University’s Division of University Relations.
Shardlow and his wife, Nadine (AU ’86) live in Almond and are the parents of two grown children: son Justin and daughter Eva.
