Mark Edstrom holds a rare honor in Alfred University athletics. He was the leading scorer in basketball and also the leading scorer in football.
A native of Jamestown, NY, Edstrom participated in football, basketball and track & field in high school. He was the second leading career scorer in basketball upon his graduation.
Edstrom came to AU as a basketball player. He closed out his four-year career with 1,356 points, which ranked third on the all-time scoring list at the time of his induction.
Away from football for three years, Edstrom suddenly decided he wanted to play again. Coach Alex Yunevich issues Mark and uniform and look what happened.
Edstrom was the leading scorer in 1975 with 41 points. He included one touchdown, 14-of-17 conversion kicks and 8-of-19 field goal attempts. He was a member of Yunevich's last team (1976). His 28-yard field goal tied Ithaca, 3-3. He hit one from 42 yards the next Saturday against St. Lawrence and the Saxons won 3-2 although they did not have a single first down the whole game.
He is in his tenth year with the U.S. Postal Service. A postal inspector for three years, Edstrom is now a manager of Systems Compliance, U.S. Postal Service in Springfield, MA.
Mark and his wife, Elaine, are the parents of Kelly Robin.
