Former Lexington High School standout, Maria (Mia) Dempsey Gould, '80, was a e=member of the AU women's swimming & diving team from 1976-80. During her career she won 62-of-68 races.
A ceramic art and design graduate, Dempsey Gould was a two-time New York State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NYSAIAW) champion in the 50-yard freestyle. In 1979, she became the first women's swimmer at Alfred to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships when she qualified in the 100-freestyle.
Gould graduated from Lexington High School where she was a member of the swimming and softball teams. She was a tri-captain of the swim team during her senior year.
Following her graduation from Alfred, Dempsey Gould taught ceramic art and design at Westover School in Danbury, CT, where she also coached hockey, swimming and softball for two years before earning her MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
