Lloyd (Gus) Larson came out of Johnsonburg High School to play one season of football and four years of basketball at Alfred University. He was captain of the 1928-29 squad.
He always has been known as "Gus" and admits he doesn't know why.
"I had picked up the nickname in grade school," Larson said. "Frankly, I have no idea how it happened."
As it happened, Larson almost made a career out of playing against All-Americans. As an 18-year-old sophomore, he came up against Syracuse All-American Vic Hanson in basketball. Later he was on the AU football team that played the New York University national champions in New York. All-Americans Ken Strong and Al Lassman wore NYU uniforms.
Larson was a math teacher and coach at Canisteo High School from 1929-1934. He was assistant coach and math teacher for nine years at Corning Northside.
From 1943-1973, Larson was manager of Sales Selection and Training at the Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY.
He was a charter member of the American Society of Training Directors. He is a member of the board of directors and a member of the Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. and Mrs. Larson have three children: Debbie, Joan and Ann.
