Lewis Obourn was born in Mansfield, PA and grew up in Corning, NY where he was an outstanding athlete at Corning Northside High School.
He fit the tag of "all-around athlete." Obourn won four varsity letters in football, basketball and track & field in high school and participated in the same sports at Alfred University.
Obourn was president of his senior class in Corning and also president of the senior class at AU. He was also leader of the Varsity 'A' Club.
Obourn was a member of a special team in AU history; the 1930 squad that played the first night game at Merrill Field. AU defeat Clarkson 27-0.
He had two long runs during the 1930 season. The first was for 72 yards as the Saxons downed the University of Buffalo 20-0. Three weeks lated Obourn broke away for 88 yards and a TD against Hobart. This is one of the 20 longest plays in AU history.
The 1930 team finished 4-3-1 and included an appearance against Yale in the Yale Bowl.
After graduation from AU, Obourn was a teacher in East Rochester Public Schools from 1932-34. He was promoted to principal and later served as superintendent from 1944 until his retirement in 1970.
He was president of the East Rochester Rotary Club and president of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
He has four children: Constance, Peter, Theodore and John.
