A two-sport star at Alfred, Benoit was a four-year starter on the Saxon football team, of which he was captain his junior and senior years. As an offensive guard, he earned All-ECAC honors and All-American honors his senior year.

Benoit was also a star in track at AU, where he was team captain his junior and senior years. He was a three-time ECAC and state indoor champion in the 35-pound weight throw his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He was also a two-time state outdoor champion in the discus throw his sophomore and junior years.

A native of Ballston Spa, Joe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ceramic Engineering from AU in 1982. He has held several positions in the ceramics industry and is now Senior Ceramics Engineer with Syracuse China Corporation in Syracuse, N.Y. where he has worked since 1990.

His biggest thrill was the opening game of his freshman year in football against Brockport. He states that as a starting offensive guard it was a very emotional game which ended in a tie.

In 1990, Benoit resumed throwing discuss and hammer at the competitive level, qualifying for the Open Empire State Games four years in a row.

Benoit resides in Cazenovia with his wife, Laura, and the couple's two children, Amanda and Aaron.
