John Jewell came to Alfred in 1981 via Elmira's Thomas A. Edison High School where he swam his way into the record books, still maintaining the record in the 500 and 1650 freestyle.

Jewell reached All-America status in each of his four years on the team and was named an NCAA Academic All-American three times. The highlight of his career was defeating the NCAA defending champion, St. Lawrence team, in 1982.

After graduating in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in ceramic engineering, Jewell stayed at Alfred and received his Master's in glass science in 1986 and his doctorate in ceramics in 1989. During his advanced degree work, John served as the assistant coach for the men's swimming & diving team for three years and head coach of the women's swimming & diving team in 1988-89.

Jewell and his wife, Susan, reside in Attleboro, MA where he is employed by Molten Metal Technology as a senior research engineer.
