A graduate of Newark Junior-Senior High School, Policano was a two-sport star and a three-year starter on the football team. He played offensive tackle his sophomore year before playing both offensive and defensive tackle his junior and senior years. As a junior, he played on the Saxon's undefeated 1952 squad.
Policano was captain of the Saxon team his senior year playing all 60 minutes of every game except for a decisive win over the University of Buffalo.
George was also a standout on the AU wrestling team, earning three varsity letters. In three years, Policano lost only one match.
Among his biggest thrills as an AU student-athlete, George cites scoring a touchdown against Hofstra in the 1952 undefeated season and the victory over St. Lawrence which had a string of 17 straight wins.
After earning his bachelor's degree in mathematics from AU in 1954 and later earning a master's degree in education from Syracuse University. He served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps and 20 years in the Marine Corps reserves, retiring as a Major.
George taught math for two years at Norwich High School, where he was assistant football coach and varsity baseball coach. He taught math and was a guidance counselor for 33 years in the Syracuse City School District, where he coach football, wrestling and tennis.
