Gene Castrovillo was appointed athletic trainer at Alfred University's in 1969 and is largely credited with building an athletic training program that now offers an academic major and is fully accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

He was appointed athletic director in 1978 and held both the head trainer and AD positions until 1981. He served solely as athletic director from 1981 until his retirement in 1990.

Castrovillo is well known in training circles. He served as athletic trainer to the U.S. Junior National Basketball Team in 1979; was athletic trainer at the U.S. Sports Festival in Colorado Springs in that same year; was staff trainer at the Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid in 1980; and is past president of the New York State and Eastern Athletic Trainers Association.

At AU he is known for his advocacy in growing women's sports programs and also for improvements made to the athletic facilities, most notably the expansion of the McLane Center, including the installation of the fitness center. In 2019, the training room in the McLane Center was renamed the Gene Castrovillo '75 Athletic Training Room.

Castrovillo earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Maryland in 1967 and a master's degree in education from Alfred in 1975. He is currently director of athletics at the Somerset (PA) Area School District and also owns and operates Oasis Sports Fitness Center in Somerset, PA.

Castrovillo and his wife, Linda, live in Somerset, PA, with their son, Anthony.
