Pat Hughes ranks with the all-time greats of Alfred University cross country. He captained Saxon teams of 1930-31 that won successive Middle Athletic States Collegiate A.A. Championships at Van Cortandt Park in New York City.
In his junior year, Hughes was the winner as AU defeated Army in a dual meet at West Point. He tied for fourth with a teammate as AU won the Middle Atlantic States crown and broke the course record at Colgate.
Hughes had to undergo a serious operation after his junior season, but came back to run in pain the next year.
The success of these AU teams was due in a large measure to the leadership, inspiration, enthusiasm and example of Pat Hughes.
Hughes was a teacher and coach in the Syracuse school system at Vocational H.S. and Eastwood H.S. His Eastwood cross country teams dominated in Central New York and also won a National Championship.
He was supervising principal at Lyons Falls Central School; assistant superintendent of Liverpool School and professor of science at Castleton State College in Vermont.
Hughes was married to Virginia Richter Hughes '33. Mrs. Hughes died in March 1984 and Pat died in November of the same year. They are survived by their son, James.
