David Neil Smith did more than just excel on the basketball court. Smith was given the prestigious 1981 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Merit Medal Award for combined academic and athletic success.
A varsity basketball player all four years, Smith was also a member of Keramos, the Ceramic Engineering Society at Alfred, and served as president during his senior year.
Smith still ranks in Alfred University's top-10 in two different categories: seventh in all-time scoring (1,274 points) and eighth in rebounding (611).
Smith noted his biggest thrill at AU was a win his senior year against traditional rival, St. Lawrence.
"It was our final home game and until that night we had never beaten St. Lawrence in my four years," he said. "We beat our arch-rivals by 13 points. It was an important game because we were in the hunt for a share of the ICAC championship. It was the first time we had beaten them in some time."
"It was our night from the opening tip," Smith recalled. "We won the tip and I opened the game with a dunk."
Smith currently makes his home in Columbus, OH where he is VP of McFadden Sales. He and his wife Cynthia are the parents of two daughters, Ashley and Alexandra.
