A member of Mike Schaeberle's swimming & diving team, David A. Pomponio is considered one of the best divers in Alfred University history. When he graduated, he held eight diving records. He set a new record in the one-meter dive in 1973 with a score of 167.15.
The former Connetquot High School standout qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships three straight years (1972-1974) in four events.
After earning his bachelor's degree in ceramic art, Pomponio went to Adelphi University, where he earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree.
Pomponio has been an art teacher at Connetquot High School for 16 years. He also coached the swimming & diving team for the Town of Islip for eight year and was the diving coach at Sayville High School for three years.
Also an owner of Gold's Gym in Oakdale, Pomponio has enjoyed much success in competitive bodybuilding. He finished third at Mr. USA competition in 1981 and 1985. He was sixth in the 1982 Mr. America competition and was 11th in the Mr. World Championships in 1986.
He and his wife Ellen reside in Blue Point with their two daughters, Gianna Marie and Justine Capri.
