Brian O'Neil left little doubt when he left AU in 1984 that he was among the finest athletes to ever don the Purple & Gold.
One of the honored football players in Alfred's long and storied gridiron tradition, O'Neil was a consensus All-American after his senior season and later played with three NFL teams in a total of seven preseason games. As good as he was on the football field, O'Neil was also one of the school's finest track & field athletes. He qualified for the national championships in the 400-meter relay in 1982 and held the indoor and outdoor records in the 400-meter dash.
His football accomplishments gained him stints with the Washington Redskins, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. He made 353 tackles (208 solo) in his AU career and was a vital member of the 1981 team which earned AU's only NCAA playoff berth after an unbeaten regular season (10-0) prior to 2016 - which O'Neil cites as his fondest memory.
The Geneseo native had 21 career interceptions and was a First Team Kodak, Associated Press and CoSIDA All-American selection following his senior season. O'Neil was a three-time ECAC Upstate New York selection. He is married to the former Julie Kurtz and now works for the Steris Corporation of Mentor, OH while making his home in Fairport, NY.
