On a birth certificate in Hamilton, Ontario, he is listed at Bernard Edward Oldfield. During his outstanding foot racing career at AU, he became "Barney" Oldfield.
This was a very natural happening when you remember that the legendary "Barney" Oldfield of the old days, of auto racing, was a grand uncle of AU's Barney Oldfield.
He was a champion in cross country and track at AU. In 1933 and 1934, he won the cross country championships of the Middel Atlantic States Association and also the mile and two-mile races.
The Middle Atlantic race was something of an Eastern championships. In 1933, the New York Times played the story under an 8-col. head saying "Race Led by Oldfield of Alfred."
Oldfield was a track champion at East High in Buffalo before coming to AU.
Serving in the U.S. Air Force, Oldfield was a member of the team that tested the first jet airplane. he was associated with Hughes Aircraft for 20 years before his retirement.
Oldfield and his wife, Marie, have three children, Kenneth, Janet and June.
