Al Brown coached the AU men's lacrosse team for seven seasons (1989-95). During that time, the Saxons posted an 85-25 record, with the 85 wins being an AU career record for coaching. His teams competed in the NCAA Division III championship tournament four times and the ECAC championships twice (winning the ECAC Upstate title in 1995, his final season).
Brown guided the Saxons to a school single-season record 15 victories in 1990, when he was named national Division III Coach of the Year. That year, AU competed in the NCAAs for the first time ever, something Brown considers his greatest thrill as an AU coach.
Brown earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from C.W. Post College in 1975. He played lacrosse four seasons at C.W. Post, earning All-American honors as a defenseman in 1973 and 1974. He also holds a master's degree in physical education, which he received from Adelphi University in 1982.
In addition to coaching men's lacrosse at AU, Brown also served as an assistant professor of physical education, director of the fitness center and as an assistant football coach. Since 2000 he has been athletic director and head football and boys' lacrosse coach at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, RI.
Brown and his wife Linda live in Portsmouth, RI, and have three grown children, including a daughter, Jennifer, who is a 1997 AU graduate.
